Michael Parkinson grew up in Michigan. After a few trips to Florida for vacation as a kid, he landed in Miami semi-permanently and got a job with Dade Paper company. It wasn’t too long before he met his wife, Dona, and a year after that, they married in her hometown of Mooresville, NC. After a short stint from Mooresville to Michigan and back to Florida, the young family grew for 20 years. With two young daughters and newly acquired vacation time, the Parkinsons were ready to escape the Florida humidity. When Michael’s wife suggested taking their girls camping in Boone, Michael initially replied: “What’s that?”, but quickly conceded to pack their van and venture north for the green scenery and the drop in temperature.
It didn’t take much convincing once their van made it up to the mountains – the air was cooler, crisper, cleaner and Michael says he appreciated the woodsy feel of the area – a welcome change from Miami. Michael and Dona are dreamers – but they are also just crazy enough to pursue some of those dreams. After vacationing in the NC mountains for years in the early 80’s, they fell in love with a 10-acre plot of land outside of Boone, dreaming of building a home eventually. As they religiously visited little Boone to explore and camp from their van, they decided their 10-acre dream was a little too far out of town for their liking.
By 1988, Michael and Dona were still dreaming, and still in love with the peaceful nature of the High Country. On one of their many trips to the High Country, the pair were relentlessly looking to make their dreams a reality. Their realtor introduced them to a huge swath of undeveloped, pristine, natural mountain land, except for two speck houses at the front of the hopeful development situated in calming Valle Crucis. They looked at a couple of lots on the property but weren’t sold on the prospect of building. One afternoon, they found themselves sitting together in the yard of the speck house, talking about how crazy it would be to live here, unable to go inside due to the potential safety hazard of the unfinished home.
Ironically, the day the couple returned to their home in Florida they received the call that the speck home was complete and ready to be seen. His wife flew back to Boone, bringing her dad with her to walk the newly built home. With an excited call home to her husband, they decided to buy their dream. Little did they know how the Valle Cay community would spring up around them, steadily building to be one of the most financially secure and sought after communities of the High Country.
Their Valle Cay home became their second home – Michael laughs “this is a nicer house than our home!”, and finally, they moved permanently in 1994, when their eldest daughter graduated college. The couple was, quite obviously, some of the first residents of this newly minted Valle Crucis community. The community has grown immensely in the years since, yet still maintains that ‘Blue Ridge Parkway’ feel that initially drew them to Valle Cay.
It still feels safe and cozy. Its quaintness is full of nature, and Michael remarks, it simply feels like “a better place to grow up”.
